THE LEGEND OF PETRA
-
Location and History: Located in southwest Jordan, Petra was the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, a nomadic Arab people, from around 300 BC.
-
Famous for: Its iconic rock-cut architecture carved from pink sandstone cliffs, earning it the nickname "The Rose City." The most famous structure is probably the Al Khazneh, a massive temple with an ornate facade, also known as "The Treasury."
-
Trading Hub: Petra thrived as a major trading center along the incense route, controlling trade routes that brought goods from Arabia, Asia, and Africa.
-
Water Management: The Nabataeans were ingenious engineers who developed a complex water management system that allowed the city to flourish in the desert.
-
Decline and Rediscovery: Petra declined after Roman rule and the rise of sea trade routes. It was largely forgotten until its rediscovery in the early 1800s by Western explorers.
-
Modern Status: Today, Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, attracting visitors from around the globe.
